The Original Thanksgiving

Have you ever wondered what the first Thanksgiving really looked like? Picture it… pilgrims who bathed maybe once a week and had maybe two changes of clothing, who worked in the woods, dirt and over open fires.

They served as hosts and invited Native American guests, who they knew without them they would have died. These indigenous peoples taught them about corn and how to grow things together, such as beans and squash and to use fish heads for fertilizer.

Or so the story goes. The original celebrants were the ones who ate whatever they could and were celebrating surviving. Maybe it was deer, fish, squash, squirrel, beans… we don't really know for sure what they ate.

What we do know is that it was about gratitude, community, and acceptance of differences. And isn't that what we all need a bit more of, regardless of where we fall on any political spectrum? This Thanksgiving, may we all find something to be grateful for, and someone to share it with.
